Technique
A mixture of platinum and palladium metal salts are added to
a solution of ferric oxalate sensitizer and then brush-coated onto 100% cotton
rag, fine art, water color paper. Negatives are placed in direct contact with
the coated paper and exposed under strong UV light. Archival processing (developing,
clearing steps and washing) of the exposed coated paper follows and the resultant
print is left overnight on a drying screen. The dried print is flattened in
a heavy press for a day or two prior to spotting, which is performed with
inks using a #000 watercolor brush. Lastly, the print is signed in pencil
on the verso, covered with a protective vellum sheet, wrapped in polypropylene
bag to protect from moisture, sandwiched between stiff corrugated board, and
then packaged for transport.
Prints are sold unmated, so that you may choose whether to show the brush-stroked border within the windows matting. Included in the print price is US Priority Mail shipping with delivery confirmation for USA customers only. An additional $30 is required for shipping via International Air Mail with insurance.
Platinotypes
Platinotype prints are produced via a non-silver printing process,
which produces an image that exhibits an extremely long tonal range. Platinotypes
exhibit exceptional (almost luminous) detail in the highlight regions and
finely differentiated shadow tones, which I find necessary to realize my intended
photographic vision.
Since noble metals like platinum, palladium, and gold do not tarnish, rust, or oxidize, platinotypes are completely archival with the longest permanency of any printing process (including any photographic process, oils, and watercolors) on paper - commonly offering centuries of permanency. They are so resistant to light, oxidation, and chemical contamination that early examples of platinotypes produced in the 1880's still show no fading. Unlike prints on silver gelatin emulsions on the surface of commercial photographic papers, the hand-coated platinotype image actually resides within the fibers of the fine art paper, which gives a three-dimensional aesthetic quality in addition to archival permanence.
Price / Print
Dimensions
Prints are priced at $800 each, which is what I obtain net
of gallery commissions. Newer images are currently hanging in art galleries
(not displayed on this site) and are currently only available through those
venues.
All images in panoramic format are approximately 6 X 18 (inches) printed on 12 X 22 (inches) 100% cotton, fine art, watercolor paper.
Payment is accepted in advance via credit card (through my PayPal account), USPS money order (written to the artist), or personal check (written to the artist / but requires a 2-week wait period to clear). Please call or email me to make payment and shipping arrangements.
I will only ship to the
confirmed address on your PayPal account or a street address (no P.O. Boxes
or APO addresses), unless special arrangements are made in advance.
Have fun and enjoy the images on the site,
